Medical Subject Headings

Medical Subject Headings (also known as MeSH) is a controlled vocabulary produced by the National Library of Medicine for describing biomedical and health-related information resources. Now published as an online database, MeSH was originally published as a serial.

Publication History

The first edition of Medical Subject Headings was published in 1960, intended to be used in Index Medicus (which the National Library of Medicine had just taken over) and the National Library's catalog. Some editions were published as issues or sections of Index Medicus. The last printed edition of Medical Subject Headings was published in the early 21st century. MeSH continues to be updated annually, with the current version available for searching and processing online.
