Stars and Stripes is a newspaper published by and for US military personnel, authorized by the Defense Department. (There is a Wikipedia article about this serial.)
The first paper called Stars and Stripes was a single issue published by Union soldiers in Missouri, dated November 9, 1861. The title was also used for a newspaper created by Union prisoners of war in New Orleans in 1861 and 1862. Editions have since been published during various wars and overseas deployments (though not always between them). A privately-published paper using the same name was also printed for a while after World War I. Stars and Stripes merged with the veterans' newspaper The National Tribune in the 1920s, and for a time was published under both names. No issue or contribution copyright renewals were found for this serial. It is still published today.
