The Anatomy of Melancholy is an expansive work on depression and a variety of other subjects written by Robert Burton.
Bibliographic notes
Burton's first edition of The Anatomy of Melancholy was published in 1621, as by "Democritus Junior". Burton revised his work repeatedly thereafter, publishing four more revised editions in his lifetime. A sixth edition published in 1651 included "severall considerable additions" that Burton wrote but had not published by the time of his death in 1640. Many more recent editions have also been published, some with annotations that may make the work more accessible to modern readers.
