Pericles is a 17th century play generally attributed to William Shakespeare, about the adventures of a prince in ancient Greece. Bibliographic notesPericles was first published in quarto in 1609, attributed to William Shakespeare. It was reprinted in quarto multiple times over the next few decades, but was not included in the First Folio. Most scholars credit Shakespeare for substantial portions of the play, but many believe it was written with a co-author. The most commonly proposed co-author is George Wilkins, who published a novel telling the same story around the time the play was first published. As the original publication is considered a "bad quarto", more recent editions sometimes take more liberties than with other Shakespeare plays to attempt to reconstruct the authors' intent in its scripting and staging.
