War and Peace is the usual English title of a long Russian novel (with historical and philosophical asides) by Leo Tolstoy, set around the time of the Napoleonic wars.
Bibliographic notes
The first version of War and Peace was published serially in Russian magazines beginning in 1865. The first book version, with substantial changes from the magazine serialization, was published in 1869. Tolstoy revised the novel somewhat in later editions. The work has been translated into many languages, with English translations appearing beginning in the 1880s.
