Ulysses

by James Joyce

Ulysses is an modernist novel by James Joyce, set in Dublin on June 16, 1904.

Bibliographic notes

Ulysses was serialized in The Little Review beginning with the March 1918 issue, but publication was cut short in 1920 after an obscenity prosecution began in the United States (which also initially prevented the work from being copyrighted in the US). The first book publication of the full novel was in Paris in 1922, by Sylvia Beach's Shakespeare and Company. Another edition was published later that year for the Egoist Press in London. The first American edition was published in 1929, without authorization; the first authorized American edition, published after a US appeals court cleared the novel of obscenity charges, appeared in 1934.
