"Federal judge orders couple to remove Web links to Mormon text. The
Corporation that holds copyrights for Mormon church wins extension of
earlier order forcing critics to take church handbook off their Web site

"U.S. District Judge Tena Campbell also ordered church critics
Jerald and Sandra Tanner to remove links to the copyrighted Mormon
text from their Web site.":

  http://www.utlm.org/
"The purpose of this site is to document problems with the claims of
Mormonism and compare LDS doctrines with Christianity."
[They do not have a hidden agenda. I see their own online books are
now listed on the OnlineBooks page.]

"IRI ["International Reserve Inc., the corporation that holds copyrights
used by the church"] claimed the Tanners violated the order in the
meantime by posting Web addresses of other sites containing the
copyrighted church handbook."

...

"The updated order banned links to court documents and newspaper articles
with the Web address of an Australian site that displays the entire
handbook. It also mandated that Lighthouse erase the handbook's table
of contents, which appears in court documents on the site.

[banning court documents. anything wrong with that?]

...

".. our position that simply having references on your Internet site
to someone else's Internet (site) does not constitute infringement,"
said Barnard.

...

"At the hearing, Barnard suggested the church might want to add The
Salt Lake Tribune as a defendant because it published the address of
the Australian Web site.

...
"We have no intention of going after The Salt Lake Tribune," said Broadbent.

Judge rejects 'fair use' Web posting of copyrighted matter, denies motion
to dismiss copyright-infringement lawsuit filed by Los Angeles Times, The
Washington Post against FreeRepublic.com

[ this is probably the right descision.]

"Students, teachers criticize Net filtering in NYC schools; virtually
impossible for students in city schools to do sophisticated research,
say teachers"
http://www.freedomforum.org/speech/1999/11/10nynetfilter.asp

"The blocking program sweeps far too broadly," ... someone said.
etc etc this is an old story...
....

"When used properly, the filter can be tailored to schools, teams of
students or even individual students, said Bernard I. May, a spokesman for
Symantec Corporation, the parent company of the I-Gear's maker, Urlabs.

Why stop there? Why not filter to particular personalites of those
having Multiple Personality Syndrome?

someone said "there's no point in having the Internet in schools if
filters are going to limit it in this way."

but See Cliff Stoll's new book, _High Tech Heretic_.
Haven't read it , but it seems to say
there is no point to having the internet in school.

The brain is a wonderful thing, when used properly.
