The Assassins were a heretical and esoteric Iranian Islamic sect. They
gave us our term "assassin" and came into contact with the Crusaders in
the guise of the "Old Man of the Mountain"; they also figure in a
semi-mythical account by Marco Polo. Their story is enormously dramatic
and is also fascinating from the point of view of the psychology and
sociology of religion and mysticism. My electronic book "The Assassins
