Re: Page images of books (was: New to the list.)



The project is quite big -- by my estimate the coding of the site I propose
will take several months full time, but since I cannot work on it full time,
it will take much longer. However, soon I hope to have some samples
available.

For most purposes, JPEG is better than GIF or PNG; the exceptions are simple
line-drawings, but most
of the material I have is photographic in nature, or are line drawings with
such level of detail, that JPEG works better. I will avoid GIF due to patent
mess, and the fact that PNG is better than GIF anyway.

For page images, I actually would prefer to use TIFF group IV coding, or
when available JBIG2, but as these are not supported by most browsers, I
will stick with PNG until these become more common.
