The Big Breach , Richard Tomlinson, MI6 expose'

  from NTK now, 2001-03-09
"Meanwhile - and we'd say in accordance with prophecy, but we
never thought it'd pan out like this - after buying up a big
bunch of The Big Breach (and obviously selling *all* of
them, clearly, no problems there), noted secrecy/privacy
busters 192.COM have apparently liberated their own content,
and are now offering a free bookz version of the Tomlinson
autobio. Of course, now it's readily available and you don't
have to go through the fun of self-righteously mirroring it,
the book itself is kinda boring, but you can get it in Word
format, presumably with KGB Macro virus and MAC number of
Tomlinson's desktop PC included. Think we'll wait for the
seven-line Perl precis.

Tomlinson worked for British secret agency MI6. They are apparantly
disguntled employers. After 5 years of the game author-and-redactor,
the book was finally published in Russia.

requisite hassles:
from http://thebigbreach.com/legal/

"A number of countries have fallen [sic] complied with the determined
efforts of the SIS legal department, which reportedly has a 5-person
team working full-time to make Richard Tomlinsons life as unpleasant
as possible.... in Australia and New Zealand. ....
A UK publisher, Fourth Estate, received a visit from the Special
Branch police and had an editorial computer as well as paper files
confiscated shortly after they started to negotiate a publishing
deal... Switzerland ....literary agent in Zurich, who indicated
the willingness to assist in the negotiations between our company
and Richard. After several rounds of negotiations, some of which
happened to be by non-encrypted e-mail, and a day before the signing
the actual contract, the agent got the following very strongly-worded
letter in German language, threatening a prison sentence.... Italy,
a particular department of the Italian Ministry of Defence (MoD)...
In the United States, within days of Tomlinson contacting a potential
publisher, the publisher was visited by FBI agents. FBI agents also
contacted other American citizens who have helped prepare the book
for publication. The FBI agents acknowledged that the visits were
prompted by electronic surveillance indicating that the individuals
may have been in contact with Tomlinson; they also said that they
were acting in response to a request from MI6 to prevent publication
of Tomlinsons book...."

[I wonder if Robert Hanssen [[no relation]], from the
counterintelligence section of the FBI, was among them.]

http://thebigbreach.com is in Russia. I had a bit of trouble
getting the download to complete today. I tried about a half
dozen times. It kept stopping midway. For
a while the site was down completely. However eventually I was
able to download the file into the land of the Free and the
Home of the Brave sucessfully.

If you're interested in information flow another direction, try
_The Sword and the Shield: The Mitrokhin Archive and the Secret
History of the KGB_ , not on the web, in the bookstore. I haven't
read it. Vasili Mitrokhin worked as chief archivist for the
foreign-intelligence arm of the KGB. He
became disillusioned with the system, and started TAKING NOTES.
After 12 years of daily note-taking, longer that most PhD
dissertations, he moved to England with 10s of 1000s of pages.
Where he met his coauthor Christopher Andrew.

also available at your local online bookstore, where you can
read the reviews.

Tomlinson mentions Mitrokhin...

As I get more middle-aged I become more interested in reading history.
I used to be interested in serious subjects in my youth, but
I've come to appreciate comedy.
