out of print but in copyright

Does anyone know of any schemes for getting out of print books that are
still in copyright distributed?
I've seen books on the shelves of my local university bookshop that have a
little notice on the back saying something to the effect of 'this book was
printed as a single-copy print run', and pointing out how clever and
high-tech it is that they can do this -- I think these have been newly
written books, though. I'm looking for a copy of a scientific book
written in the early seventies, I think, and which is currently out of
print. It's a very well-known work in the field, so it is likely to get
reprinted eventually, but quite possibly not for many years yet -- I'm
impatient!
