Actually region 2 is Japan and Europe, there are something like 5 DVD regions.

I easily bought a regionless player in San Francisco last summer. I needed
it for video captures for my 2nd book for several titles I had obtained
permissions to copy from that were not available in the US.

But then I am active in anime (Japanese animation) circles where such
players are common.
