Copyright question

Hi all,

I, usually a gleaner here, have a small question about copyrights.

I am happily typing poetry. The series I am doing was published in 1908,
and the author died in 1923. No problems there at all.

My question is about UN-published poetry by the same author. This was
supposed to be an 8 volume series, but she set aside the unfinished volumes
to spend her energy on other projects (she was old and had a bad heart).

We know the rest of these poems exist, as well as many others which do not
belong to the set. I have a friend who has seen them, in a library which
has all her notebooks. I am toying with the idea of going to England for
several months someday, taking a small scanner and a notebook computer. I
would LOVE to finish the remaining volumes, and perhaps another volume of
her other works. This would be online, of course, though I am also thinking
of making and selling (inexpensively) disks of her collected works.

Are these unpublished works public domain? Or would they begin a new
copyright (presumably the property of the college)? I would be willing to
negotiate a contract with the college, but I'd like to know before I start.
