I recently received an e-mail from a young woman who found a poem she
believes her grandfather wrote during World War II. He sent it home on a
typed sheet of paper but did not sign it. He died in 1987, and she found
the poem this year when her grandmother was being put in a nursing home. I
was hoping I could post the poem to see if any of the people on the list
recognize it, so that she (and I) could learn if it was written by a
better-known poet than her grandfather. Thanks, Aaron Elson
[Moderator: Posting an extract here is probably fine (or the entire poem
if it's reasonably short and is not likely to be a work still under
someone else's copyright). There are also other forums for posting
and identifying poems that might be good places to ask. The Usenet
group "rec.arts.poems" at one point had some knowledgeable folks in
it who might still be there. You might also want to try submitting
a distinctive phrase in the poem to Google and Alta Vista and see
if any matches come up. - JMO]
