Re: RE: OmniPage 11 and Epson scanners

I praised FineReader after using it a short time. I have now had time to
explore it extensively.

I made at least one error in my previous message. FineReader will allow
more than one language per page. I have tried English and French, English
and German, English and Latin, English and Greek. The first two combinations
work without any difficulties. The Latin recognition was good but the Latin
spell checker was not very good. Perhaps my sample was not classic Latin.
The English and Greek combination was done poorly. Mainly because it was
not possible to specify which Greek font to use as default. Different
Greek fonts have characters in different places (especially accented
characters). I have reverted to doing Greek by hand.

FineReader will split two page spreads into two files automatically (set in
options) and deskew each separately.

I use FineReader for all my scanning at present, except when I want to scan a
short passage into a existing WordPerfect or WordPro document. I can access
TextBridge directly from those programmes.

There are still problems with FineReader. It is much more confused by
scored text than Omnipage. It also has trouble with the curvature on the
inside margins of books. It will simply omit words in this case.

I like the text editor in FineReader much more than those in other programmes.
I can do most of my proofing directly in FineReader, and then shift to a word
processor to remove page breaks and place endnotes.

It is possible to move the image of the characters. The window at the
bottom is only the default position. There are a number of viewing
options. There is also an option to despeckle an image.

I haven't attempted to go direct to PDF. Usually because there are so
many changes to the formatting that I want to make. So I save in RTF and
then import into a word processor, print to PostScript and then convert
to PDF using Acrobat Distiller.
