More scanning tips

No matter which program or scanner you use...

1. Take the cover off the scanner when you scan.
You don't need it if you are scanning a bound book.
(I admit it took me a long time to realize this
simple point!) You do need to press the book down
firmly though.

2. Clean the glass of the scanner bed each time
before scanning. It makes a difference. Use a
glass spray and a terry towel or chamois to dry.
Check often for paper bits left on the bed.

3. Make a mask from white paper just larger than
the area you wish to scan. Tape that to the
scan bed. That cuts down on the dark areas
around the text that sometimes lead to poor
zoning or recognition, and can mean the
difference between being able to zone
automatically, and manually zoning hundreds
of pages.

4. If you own a book with a very inflexible
binding, consider cutting off the binding.
You can then press the individual signatures
on the scan bed much flatter. Rebinding is
probably necessary anyway if the glue is that
hard. (Don't try this with library books!)

5. If you notice print-through (type from
the other side of the page) in pictures or
OCR, try this: change the brightness and
contrast settings in your scanner interface;
or, place a black piece of paper behind the
offending page.)
