Administrivia: Moving pains

If you've been wondering why I've been a bit quiet lately, both
on the list and with new additions, I'm trying to cope with a couple
of moves going on right now. While they're going on, new listings
(and possibly Book People postings) may get delayed for a few days.

Not only are Mary, Matthew and I moving to a new house tomorrow,
but our library has been trying to move around its web services.
(This shouldn't change the URLs or other addresses you're using
to access The On-Line Books Page; it just means that the underlying
computing hardware will be different.) The site actually
changed machines yesterday, and we discovered before long that
the new server couldn't keep up with the load at peak access
times. (Seems the site was more popular than most folks here knew... :-)
So we'll probably be moving it back to its original machine,
upgrade the new server, tune the software, and then try the move again
later on.

I apologize for the slow performance
and outages some of you may have experienced
during this period. To simplify things, and prevent files from
getting messed up in the hops back and forth, I think it's best to
keep the site running with a freeze on changes for a little while
until the dust settles. (Since Book People archiving and digest creation
also occurs on the same site, I may delay those activities for a little
while as well.)

We hope to resume updates and postings shortly after Labor Day
(this coming Monday, which in the US is the third day in a
3-day holiday). I hope everyone else has a good weekend, and
I'm looking forward to hearing about and listing more on-line
books soon!

John
