Gentlemen, start your backups!

"Any last words?" the executioner growled.
"Why yes," the doomed man said brightly. "I should like to read the
entire Naked Word web site, out loud, to the crowd. Tell them to get
comfortable. This is going to take a while."
A voice from the crowd: "Aintcha heard? The Naked Word no longer has a
web site!"
"Dang!" muttered the condemned. "I should have said 'Gutenberg!'"
The ax fell. There was a dull thud, as of a melon falling from a table.
Darkness descended...

My little stories always have a point. Today's point: Another free web host
bites the dust. Quoted from the NBCi web site, current home of The Naked
Word's offerings:

"NBCi is in the process of making certain changes to our portal
offering that may affect the way you use the site. We are making these
modifications in light of recent changes in the Internet advertising and
financial markets. As part of these changes, NBCi will no longer offer Web
site hosting services as of July 15th.
"NBCi has made arrangements with <A HREF="http://homesteadannouncements.homestead.com/NBCI.html">Homestead.com</A> for web page hosting
and <A HREF="http://plus.xdrive.com/target.html?path=signup.html,aff=nbci061301"
>XDrive.com</A> for file storage."

The Naked Word had a short but unhappy fling with Homestead.com. Our pages
kept disappearing from the server so we switched to XOOM.com, which soon
became NBCi.

Rather than get into an endless cycle of tail-chasing, I have decided this is
the end of the road for The Naked Word's web library. Anyone who wants to use
any of our material, all of which is U.S.A. public domain, gather it home now
from members.nbci.com/etcollective before they finish shutting down (I tried
to log on via FTP today to make some small changes and found myself locked
out!) -- or write to me and I'll burn you a CD of all of TNW's books for $8.

Next victim.......?
