What the heck has happened to BiblioBytes?
We're not entirely sure. On Friday, our server hung and we had to reboot.
After we did so, access to our SQL Server was disabled, making all our
books unreadable, server passwords had been changed, and somebody had
placed a junk folder in our root directory dated 09/11/01, 9:45 AM -- the
time the World Trade Center was falling to the ground.
Clearly, this was an attack against our web site.
We immediately notified CERT, which notified the FBI and the US Military, as
the date certainly aroused suspicions. We have been cooperating fully with
the authorites in an attempt to bring the perptrators to justice, and to
prevent the attack which took us down from doing the same to other systems.
We don't know whether this was one prankster, or something larger. Nor do we
know when we're going to be back up live, particularly if our main server
is going to be required for any criminal or military investigation.
In the meantime, bear with us. We're doing the best we can here to get up
and running again.
Best-- Glenn Hauman, BiblioBytes
