Well, there was NeXT's Digitial Librarian, and some of the nicer BibTeX
front-ends allow one to not only manipulate a listing, but also to cause
it to open up in a reader if it's stored locally or available over a 'net
connection.
The real problem here is the lack of standardization of metadata --- it's
really a shame Apple or Microsoft doesn't build in access in the filesystem to
the metadata which is in pdfs.
