OED (Re: eBook and Paper Book Pricing)

[Apologies for cross posting, but hopefully of interest]

eBook Pricing Finally Changes For Oxford English Dictinary

The last bastion holdout for charging huge prices for CD versions
of paper editions has fallen.

[Quoting from an email I recently composed on this subject]

On a separate paper book pricing topic, I recently noted that the
Oxford English Dictionary had finally reduced the price of its CD
from ~$900-$1,000 to now ~$265-$300, and a copy of the CD is free
with the 20 volume paper edition at ~$1,800.

Warning: The ~$1,800 current pricetag is up from the $1,200 list
price as per the 2003-2004 "Books In Print," so one may still pay
more for the CD in this price package than one might think.

Obviously it would cost $300 less if you bought the $1,200 priced
paper edition and the $300 priced CD than the package deal, which
may be a possibility if you find a paper edition from old stock.

This is not as unlikely as you might think, as I found Barnes and
Noble still had an earlier OED 20 volume OED listed at $1,000 and
apparently in stock.

If you are interested in any of these, it is probably worthwhile,
very worthwhile, to make a few phone calls to various bookstores,
and other outlets, where older editions, still new, are available
and in stock. This is apparently also true for the Britannica on
paper and on CD; I bought copies of the Britannica CD at Best Buy
for $15-$20 via one of their special offers.
