First off, let me say that it was probably time for
the Liberal govt to expire in the Great White North.
They had been aroung, what 13, 14 years?
I am not entirely familiar with the present World
Trade conundrum, but I have heard that there is an
effort to restrict the flow of "cultural products"
from one state to the other in the name of "Cultural
Diversity" -- an Orwellian excuse, really as the aim
of the convention seems to create tariffs on foreign
"cultural items" in order to maintain each areas
uniqueness.
I don't know how many Scottish Reggae fans or Mexican
Anime enthusiast are going to like that, but I am sure
that many authoritarian governments will use it as an
excuse to make books written outside of their county
even more rare.
As for the entertainment and publishing industry
working to extend copyrights, what do you expect? Just
more Corporate welfare. (I do note the irony of how
much the MPAA has lauded president Bush on this
subject, while the vast majority of its members are,
it goes without saying, viscerally anti-Bush on most
other subjects. Hypocrites.)
