I do get thank you notes quite often from books I have put on the web.  
Mostly Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire and some of the Henty
books and a number from people who are blind.  A couple a month.  And yes
it does make my day.  But when I use to give them away on disk.  It just
didn't happen.  May be I had bad luck.
