Re: !@[redacted] gutenberg.org at 98% of 20,000 eBook Goal

My apologies, yesterday's count missed 68 eBooks!

And also counted the Project Gutenberg of Australia eBooks twice!

So, here are the figures as they should appear for March 31, 2006:

*

Sometime today the original Project Gutenberg site's official count
should reach 19,020, leaving only 980 more to reach 20,000.

This includes just over 550 eBooks listed from Project Gutenberg of
Australia [http://gutenberg.net.au] and just under 300 from the new
Project Gutenberg of Europe. In addition, it includes 141 from the
new Project Gutenberg PrePrints [http://preprints.readingroo.ms/].

You can also find other eBooks collections donated by a wide number
of eBook producers at the Project Gutenberg Consortia Center at the
http://gutenberg.cc site containing eBooks in over 100 languages.

Be sure to stay tuned for the 35 anniversary celebration of Project
Gutenberg from July 4 through August 4. Hopefully you will be very
pleasantly surprised at the events we are preparing for you.

Many, many thanks to the 40,000 to 50,000 volunteers who have great
respect and admiration from all those who benefit from the world of
Project Gutenberg eBooks!!!

PS

For those interested in the actual counting breakdown:

18,596 The standard gutenberg.org count, includes 553 PG Australia.
    283 Project Gutenberg of Europe
141 From the new PrePrints Section
------
19,020 Grand Total as usually reported at the top of the Newsletter.

This is ~98% of 20,000, not ~99%.

This is not an April Fool's Day report, this is the most accurate for
the moment, but you should be advised that while several of us count,
in addition to automated counting systems, every once in a while some
eBooks are counted twice, or even more often not are counted at all.

We do the best we can but not every book comes into Project Gutenberg
in the same manner, and thus the count has to be updated from time to
time to catch the ones we missed, and to find those counted twice.

In addition, we have recently tightened up the accounting systems for
the Project Gutenberg Consortia Center, and eliminated many overcount
items from donations of eBooks that were made with more than one file
per book, and we also added a number of new eBooks you can now search
via the search engine at http://gutenberg.cc by a factor of over 2.

Again our HUGE thanks to all of our volunteers who help produce eBook
files, proofread, edit, format, catalogue, and keep track of counting
these thousands of eBooks.

It is our hope to reach 20,000 eBooks via the gutenberg.org counting,
sometime during the 35th anniversary events from July 4 to August 4.

Currently there are about 95 days until July 4, so we must average 10
eBooks per day, plus a fraction, between now and then if we are to go
over 20,000 on our 35th anniversary at http://www.gutenberg.org

based on these new numbers, 19,050 is about 95% of 20,000. not 98%.]
