hi nicholas! good point, as always with you... :+)
i most certainly advocate that measures be taken to ensure
that end-line-hypenation can be removed _automatically_,
simultaneously keeping hyphens that _should_ be retained.
the same applies to the linebreaks and pagebreaks per se;
removal should be automatic, and not, e.g., mess up tables.
these are extremely important issues with regard to remixing!
jose and i had discussed end-line-hyphenation backchannel,
so i knew he had done it correctly on some of his products.
(i have not checked if that is true of his .pdf digital reprints,
but since he is as meticulous as you, nicholas, i assume so.)
because i consider this to be completely understood
-- the e-text is _broken_ otherwise, to my mind --
it didn't even occur to me to include this as a caveat,
so i thank you for reminding everyone of it... :+)
what i am arguing here is that sometimes we have a need
to be able to replicate the look of the original paper-book,
so we have to reserve our ability to mimic that original look.
but no, we must not let that ability constrain our other needs.
