Scholarly texts online

All,
I have a general question. I'm new to the list, and by no means an expert
about online texts. Mostly I've been a consumer of them.
Are there many *free* texts online that have been edited up to a high
*contemporary* scholarly standard, that include all the sort of data (e.g.,
alternate readings, etc.) that scholars might demand? If so, is there a
collection of links to them somewhere? If not, any speculation as to why
not?
I ask for a practical purpose, viz., we will want to mark-up and use such
reliable editions for the Text Outline Project (Textop,
http://www.textop.org). I explain my concerns and dreams in somewhat more
depth in this blog post: http://www.dufoundation.org/blog/?p=46
