John,

Thanks for adding that note to my post. When I wrote that last part,
it didn't occur to me that some people might not realize that the "it"
referred to the article, especially if they repeated the Google search
and saw that the snippet read: "(Received. 26. July. 1972;. accepted
12 February. 1973)." On the other hand, some people might not have
repeated the search and assumed that I'd meant the computer, so I'm
glad you made it clear.

The date the article was received is important, of course, because it
was more than a year after Michael's anniversary. So the fact that the
Xerox Sigma V was mentioned in the article doesn't provide much
evidence that the computer was even there on July 4, 1971 (much less
that it was ever connected to the ARPANET). That's why I asked
Woodsjay whether he or she had read it. There might have been some
mention, for instance, of the time period they were using the
computer. When I did a search for 1971, it only returned a reference
to another study: "Parameters from Melamud, Makovsky & Shaked (1971)."

P.S. I wasn't expecting to see any BP posts today. Didn't UPenn let
you have a long weekend? ;)

[Moderator: No, but I took the 4th off, so this batch of posts is
 delayed a bit.  We will also be on longer vacation after this week;
details upcoming in a later standalone post. - JMO]
