In the early '90s, an online community of older adults of which I was a
member (AOL SeniorNet) received an email from a teacher at a middle school.
The teacher told of a class project about American involvement in
World War Two. As part of their research the students wanted to read and
disuss memoirs and reminiscences of older Americans who had lived through
those times. They wanted to learn directly from people who had served in
the nation's wartime Armed Forces and Merchant Marine, as well as from
civilians on the home front that had produced, serviced, and transported
weapons and supplies from where they were made to where they were used.
The students wanted to hear from people who had cared for the wounded and
helped in otherways.
I joined the many other elders in our online community that responded. I
wrote a memoir about my work as a civil service parachute rigger with the
U. S. Army Air Corps at Patterson Field, Ohio in 1941 and at Hickam Field
from shortly after 'Pearl Harbor' until the war ended. The memoir generated
questions from the students, resulting in a Q and A. Intergenerational
communications of the finest kind for both ages.
My first memoir surfaced another, and over the years that followed I wrote an
additional half dozen or so. A few years ago, closing in on my 90th year, I
arranged them in a sort of order and printed a booklet for my children and
grandchildren for their family archive. I also formatted the collection for
posting online. BTW, the memoirs include 'industrial management' information
that may be useful in Regional Occupational Programs (ROP) and supervisory
and crew chief training. Titles of the memoirs:
Parachute Rigger: World War Two: Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii. 1941-1946
Fixing Mistakes in the Workplace, Santa Barbara, California 1979
First-Line Supervisor Inspects the Work Unit, McClellan Air Force Base,
