I started using the Internet in the 80s, before the World Wide Web
portion was available.  The general idea back then - even going into the
early 90s - was that people should share their expertise and ideas with
everyone for free.  If most users did this, then the Internet would
become a better and better resource for everyone - individual efforts
would be paid back via the overall result.  I really miss those days
sometimes.

The concept of bloggers needing donations is ludicrous.  The excuse that
they are "covering costs" is equally ridiculous, as you intimated,
especially when you consider that you can post to a blog from most
public library computers.  Even if the bloggers don't use free public
blog hosting, registering a domain, having it hosted somewhere, and
paying a monthly DSL fee is less than the cost of a Friday night out for
two.  One would assume that any time invested is recreational in nature,
anyway - if not, then why do a blog (as assumed to an online business)?
