Good points regarding economic resources. I often get questions from
people when I discuss accessibility and usability, and these questions
often make references to some users being "old school" and using
outdated formats like plaintext, and I have to point out that many
disabled computer users suffer from a high rate of unemployment, and
that often results in not being able to afford the hardware and the
bandwidth that most of us take for granted. There are also a lot of
people creating things like accessible games who give their work away,
but appreciate contributions of money so that they can update equipment,
etc. Many of us who benefit from such projects just like to give some
token to express that we acknowledge and appreciate such efforts. New
media is creating new modes of economic exchange, and I for one find
many of these forms of valuing other people's work more creative and
inclusive.
